Your first visit, step by step

Knowing what happens makes the first day easier. Here is what to expect, what to bring and what to wear.

What happens, in order

  1. Day before

    We call to confirm

We call to confirm the time and answer your questions. Fill in the forms online or on paper, whichever you prefer.

  2. 15 min early

    Arrive and check in

Come 15 minutes early so there is time to park, check in and settle. We greet you by name.

  3. Minute 1

    We talk and listen

Your therapist asks about your pain or surgery, your health, your home and what you want to do again.

  4. Minute 20

    We check how you move

Gentle tests of strength, balance and walking. Nothing is rushed, and you rest whenever you need to.

  5. Minute 40

    First treatment

Hands-on care and your first few exercises, with the therapist beside you.

  6. Minute 55

    Your plan

You leave with a printed home plan in large type, the number of visits we recommend and your next appointment.

What to bring

Put these by the door the night before.

  • Photo ID
  • Insurance or Medicare card
  • A list of your medicines
  • Referral, if your plan needs one
  • Glasses or hearing aids you use
  • Comfortable clothes and shoes

What to wear

Wear clothes you move in easily, like loose pants or shorts and a T-shirt. Wear flat, closed shoes with a good grip.

If your visit is for a knee or hip, shorts help the therapist see the joint. We have private rooms if you need to change.

Common questions

How long is the first visit?

About 60 minutes. Plan on 75 minutes in total with check-in.

Can a family member come with me?

Yes. Many patients bring a spouse, son or daughter. They are welcome in the room and learn your home exercises too.

Is the clinic easy to get around?

Yes. All three clinics are on the ground floor with automatic doors, wide hallways, chairs with arms and accessible restrooms.

What if I need a ride?

Tell us when we call. We keep a list of local ride services, and the Kentwood clinic sits on a bus line.

How many visits will I need?

Most people come twice a week for four to eight weeks. Your therapist gives you a clear number after the first visit.
